Buxton’s Platinum Jubilee Bell

Earlier in 2022, we discovered that the treble bell at Buxton had developed a crack. Following an inspection, the only safe option was to cease ringing the treble bell. This is why you will have only heard 5 bells ringing recently.

We, along with the support of the Parochial Church Council (PCC), have agreed the only sensible option is to have a new bell cast to replace the existing treble bell. The new bell will, we believe, be the only one in the United Kingdom cast and hung during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year.

Why do our church bells ring?

The Church bells can be heard regularly in Buxton, Lammas and Marsham. Most commonly they are rung to call people to worship on Sundays but you might also hear the bells on a weekday evening, when the ringers hold their practice night to improve their skills and teach beginners.

Church bells ring throughout the year to mark important occasions in the life of individuals, the church and the nation:

  • We hear them ring joyfully at weddings.
  • The sound of bells heralds the special religious services for Easter and Christmas.
  • The first minutes of each New Year are celebrated with bell ringing.
  • Ringers marked the opening of the London 2012 Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The church bells are tolled at funerals and rung half-muffled to create a mournful sound for Remembrance Sunday.

Interested in Learning to Ring?

We are always pleased to welcome people interested in learning to ring at any of our practice nights. If when you arrive the bells are ringing, please wait outside the ringing chamber until the bells have stopped before you enter.

The initial training to handle a bell can take several weeks, after which learners can begin to ring with the rest of the band. Regular attendance is advisable to maintain progress.

Our bell ringers come from all walks of life and ages. Our current band ranges from 12 to 70!
